Razzak briefs Gujral about necessity of Ganges Barrage

Water Resources Minister Abdur Razzak called on the visiting Indian Prime Minister, IK Gujral, at his hotel suit yesterday, reports UNB. They discussed matters relating to mutual interest and exchanged views on the development of water sector in Bangladesh. Abdur Razzak briefed the Indian prime minister about the necessity and importance of the construction of the Ganges barrage in Bangladesh. He requested personal intervention of the Indian Premier so that the Indian government along with senior water experts attend the international seminar on the proposed Ganges Barrage project to be held in Dhaka on March 8-9 this year. The Indian Prime Minister said his country would extend allout support and cooperation in this regard. Water Resources Minister expressed profound gratitude to the Indian premier for his personal efforts for the successful conclusion of the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty in 1996. He also expressed gratitude of Gujral for his personal directives to the Indo-Bangladesh joint committee of experts which is now discussing the issue of long term sharing of the Teesta flows and six other common rivers as well.
