Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said yesterday that 40 percent of votes were cast in the 12th parliamentary election.

The election “without opposition” in Bangladesh has seen a low voter turnout but guarantees a fifth term for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, reported several international media today. 

Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina directed party leaders and activists not to bring out any victory processions after the declaration of election results.

In some constituencies, the voter turnout in the afternoon was supposedly four and a half times that of the morning but it could not go passed 40 percent.

Clashes, attacks on rival camps and crude bomb blasts left one person killed, 50 others injured, marring the 12th national election yesterday.

Around 1:50pm, a group of youths were seen forming an orderly queue to enter the polling centre in Segunbagicha High School under Dhaka-8 constituency to cast their votes.
