OC, constable hurt in Ctg cop-criminal gunfight

Two policemen, including the officer-in-charge of Rangunia Police Station, received bullet injuries in a gunfight with criminals in Rangunia upazila of Chittagong Wednesday. The law enforcers came under attack when they rushed to Mariumnagar in the upazila to quell a clash. Locals led by one Muzibur Rahman locked in clash with supporters of one Ismail Sawdagar over occupying a piece of land, said Manzurul Morshed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rangunia Police Station. Law enforcers arrested Khorshed for his alleged involvement with the incident, our Chittagong correspondent reporting citing police as branding the arrestee as robber. Chandan Chakrabarty, OC (investigation) of the police station, and Jahedul Hasan Rizvi, a constable, were undergoing treatment at Rangunia Upazila Health Complex. The gunfight ensued around 11:00am when a team of police rushed to Mariumnagar area in the upazila and a group of criminals led by Mujibur opened fire on them, the OC said. The two groups were clashing over occupying a piece of land belongs to Roads and Highways Department in the area. When police reached there, some criminals including Khorshed opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting the police to retaliate. The criminals whom Muzibur had hired were members of a robber gang, claimed the OC. During the nearly 30-munite gunfight nearly 20 rounds of gunfire were exchanged, the OC added.
