Now Mannan seeks Ershad's blessing
BNP-led opposition alliance mayoral candidate MA Mannan has now sought blessing from Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad to win the Gazipur City Corporation elections slated for July 6.
Mannan met the JP chief at the latter's residence in Dhaka on Tuesday, a day after his rival Ajmat Ullah Khan called on the former military ruler.
Emerging from around an hour-long meeting at Ershad's Baridhara residence, Mannan claimed that the JP chief extended his party's support to him in the mayoral battle.
"I cam here to seek his blessing," Mannan said terming Ershad as political mentor. "He blessed me and supported me in the polls," he told reporters.
Mannan's claim raised confusion as Ershad on Monday was reportedly told Awami League-led ruling alliance candidate Ajmat that his party would support none of the two mayoral aspirants as it was a local government election.
Ershad however had blessed Ajmat.
It was not possible to check authenticity of Mannan's claim as the meeting was held between Ershad and Mannan only. The Daily Star made several phone calls to Ershad's personal mobile numbers as well as his political secretary Shunil Shuvo Roy. Ershad did not receive the phone while Shunil's phone was found switched off.
