Ministry weighs action after joint secretary’s mother found dead in Mirpur flat
The Ministry of Public Administration is reviewing possible action against Joint Secretary AKM Anisur Rahman after the body of his elderly mother, Nurjahan Begum, was recovered from her flat in Dhaka’s Mirpur on May 31.
Speaking to The Daily Star today, State Minister for Public Administration Abdul Bari said, "The matter is being verified, and action will be taken according to existing laws and regulations."
Responding to a question, the state minister added, "There is the Parents' Support Act, 2013. We are reviewing that law."
The incident drew widespread attention after Nurjahan Begum's body was recovered from a flat on Sunday (May 31).
She lived with her daughter, Fatima Nasrin Sultana, on the fourth floor of a five-storey building in Block C of Mirpur 6.
Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Hasan Basir said they recovered the body after receiving a call on the national emergency hotline 999.
According to the OC, the deceased has three sons -- one a joint secretary, one a teacher at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, and the other living in Canada.
Anisur Rahman is currently serving as Member (Engineering and Development) of the Mongla Port Authority.
