6-month deadline set to stop illegal waste discharge into Gulshan Lake

PM Tarique Rahman directs coordinated action to restore Dhaka’s lakes and modernise the capital’s sewage system

All illegal waste-discharge lines connected to Gulshan and Baridhara lakes will be shut down within the next six months, according to a decision made at a meeting attended by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today.

The meeting, held at the Cabinet Division conference room at the Secretariat at 11:30am, also discussed the renovation, cleaning and environmental improvement of Dhanmondi and Gulshan lakes, alongside the installation of sewage treatment plants as part of efforts to modernise Dhaka's sewage system.

The prime minister was briefed on projects undertaken by Dhaka South City Corporation, including the renovation and reconstruction of Dhanmondi Lake, the construction of Nazrul Sarobar and the installation of sewage treatment plants under the sewage system modernisation initiative.

The meeting decided that Rajuk would lead the cleaning, beautification and environmental improvement of Gulshan Lake.

Tarique Rahman reviewed several presentations on the restoration and cleaning of Dhaka's lakes and the installation of sewage treatment plants in residential and commercial buildings.

He stressed the importance of completing the projects within the stipulated timeframe and taking coordinated measures to protect the capital's environment and water bodies.

State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, State Minister for Housing and Public Works Ahmad Sohel Monjur, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Md Abdus Salam, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar, and senior officials concerned attended the meeting.
