5000 sued for Fatikchhari clash Police on April 12 filed a case against 50 people including Bhujpur union chairman and other five thousand unnamed following a clash that left at least three people dead in Fatikchhari upazila of Chittagong during April 11 countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal Police arrested 34 people including the union chairman and nayeb-e-ameer of Bhujpur unit Jamaat-e-Islami Shafiul Alam Nuri hours after the attack on April 11. During the clash Hefajat-e Islam and Jamaat activists joined in by locals attacked Awami League men. Around 100 vehicles including motorcycles, jeeps, pick-ups, a police van and a fire truck were torched during the incident. Mahmudur held in Skype case Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of Bangla daily Amar Desh, was placed on a 13-day remand, hours after he was arrested at his newspaper office in the capital's Karwan Bazar on April 11. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka granted the remand after police produced Mahmudur with a prayer for 24 days' remand in three cases.In the first case, Mahmudur was charged with sedition by publishing Skype conversations between Justice Md Nizamul Huq, then chairman of International Crimes Tribunal-1, and Ahmed Ziauddin, an expatriate Bangladeshi legal expert. Sahidur Rahman, prosecutor of the war crimes tribunal, filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station on December 13 last year. According to the case statement, Mahmudur Rahman, by publishing conversations after hacking Skype, created a negative impression about the tribunal at home and abroad and obstructed its proceedings and exercise of legal authority. Amar Desh published the conversations on December 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 last year. Amid controversy, Justice Nizamul Huq resigned on December 11.-The Daily Star April 12 2013. Hearing on May 20 against Fakhrul, others A Dhaka court on April 11 for the seventh time deferred until May 20 the hearing on charge framing against BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 28 others in a blast case. Shahbagh police filed the case against them on charge of assisting the bombings inside the Secretariat during the opposition's April 29 hartal last year. The court deferred the hearing as Fakhrul and most of the accused could not appear before it. They are now in jail in several other cases. Earlier on April 7, Fakhrul, barrister Moudud Ahmed and eight other top BNP leaders were sent to jail rejecting bails on their surrender in connection with seven criminal cases filed with Paltan, Ramna and Shahjanpur police stations.- The Daily Star April 12 2013. Zia Trust Graft Case Hearing deffered again till May 22 A Dhaka court on April 9 for the third time deferred the hearing till May 22 on charge framing against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and three others in Zia Charitable Trust graft case. The order was passed after Taherul Islam Towhid, Khaleda's counsel, submitted a petition seeking an adjournment of the hearing. In the petition, Towhid said Khaleda could not appear before the court due to security reasons as BNP-led 18-party alliance enforced hartal on April 10. The court extended the bail term of other accusedZiaul Islam Munna, assistant private secretary (APS) of another accused Harris Chowdhury; and Monirul Islam Khan, APS of Sadeque Hossain Khoka;till May 22. Act now to protect canalsHC gives 7 days for taking steps The High Court on April 7 directed deputy commissioners and superintendents of police of all districts to take effective steps within seven days to protect canals from encroachment. In response to a writ petition, the court issued a rule upon the government to explain within four weeks as to why it should not be directed to save the canals and recover them from encroachment as per records of Revisional Survey and Bangladesh Survey. It also asked the government to submit a report to the court within two weeks after complying with the order. The HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain came up with the order and rule after hearing the petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh on April 7 seeking necessary orders for protecting the canals. During the hearing, petitioner's counsel Manzill Murshid told the court that land grabbers were constructing houses and other structures on the land of canals by encroaching on those illegally.-The Daily Star April 8 2013.
