Order on plea seeking Hasina-Khaleda talks postponed
The High Court on March 21 postponed passing an order on a writ petition filed seeking direction on Awami League President Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to sit for a dialogue to resolve the ongoing political standoff. The court passed the postponement order due to the public holiday declared by the government to mourn the death of the President Zillur Rahman. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told The Daily Star that the bench may pass an order on the writ petition next week, if Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain gives power to the judges for doing so. An HC vacation bench of Justice Md Nizamul Huq and Justice Zafar Ahmed postponed the order after the attorney general informed it about the government decision of declaring March 21 a public holiday during the scheduled hearing for passing an order on the writ petition. -The Daily Star online edition March 21 2013.
Closing arguments against Kamaruzzaman will start from March 24
International Crimes Tribunal-2 has fixed March 24 for starting the closing arguments in a war crimes case against Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman as the defence for the third consecutive day failed to produce their last witness before it. The three-member tribunal led by Justice Obaidul Hassan fixed the date on March 21. The court however gave a chance to the defence saying that it would allow their witness if Kamaruzzaman's counsels could produce him before starting the closing arguments on March 24. -The Daily Star online edition March 21 2013.
Five cases against Fakhrul
Courts seek probe reports by April 21
Five Dhaka courts on March 20 asked the investigation officers of five cases filed against BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to submit probe reports by April 21. The order was passed as the officers failed to submit the reports by March 20.
The cases were filed with Kalabagan, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Sutrapur, Paltan and Motijheel police stations following the opposition's countrywide road blockade programme on December 9, 2012. The charges were torching of vehicles, obstruction on police from discharging duties, assault on law enforcers and blasting of cocktails. -The Daily Star March 21 2013.
HC to demolish BGMEA building in 90 days
Declaring the BGMEA building in the capital's Hatirjheel project illegal, the High Court in the full text of its verdict on March 19 ordered the government to demolish the structure within 90 days and use the land in the public interest. It directed Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to refund money within 12 months to buyers who had bought flats in the 15-storey building. Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukder informed that the issue would now be settled at the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court as the BGMEA could lodge a leave to appeal petition upon receiving the HC verdict.
The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain in its judgement observed that the high rise stood in the Hatirjheel project like a cancerous growth, and it would swamp the whole city unless it was removed forthwith.- The Daily Star March 20 2013.
