Attack on Tangail HindusHC orders arrest of culprits The High Court on March 13 directed police to arrest in one week culprits who allegedly attacked and tortured Hindus in a village of Gopalpur municipality in Tangail and ordered the government to protect the victims. The HC bench passed the order after hearing a petition based on a March 12 news report of Bangla daily Sangbad. The report stated that a gang of extortionists led by four individuals named Faruk, Latif, Monir and Sharif allegedly attacked and beat Hindus of the Chandabari village and vandalised their houses on March 9 for refusing to pay Tk 50,000. After the gang threatened to drive them away, 13 Hindu families took shelter in Gopalpur Police Station and filed a case the same day but police could not arrest anyone, says the report. -The Daily Star March 14 2013. 22 Brick Fields, 20 Sawmills in Ctg SC upholds HC verdict declaring those illegal The Supreme Court on March 13 upheld a High Court verdict that directed the authorities to immediately stop operations of 22 brick fields and 20 sawmills in the reserved forest area of Lohagara upazila in Chittagong and to relocate them to other places. The chamber judge of the Appellate Division said the court would not interfere in the directives as the brick fields and sawmills were damaging the environment. Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, the chamber judge, passed “no order” on a petition filed by the owners of brick fields and sawmills on March 12 seeking a stay on the HC verdict. Following a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela), the HC delivered the verdict on February 20, declaring operations of those brick kilns and sawmills illegal and ordered the owners to relocate those within a month.-The Daily Star March 14 2013. Jamaat Registration HC to hear petition on Apr 9 The High Court on March 11 fixed April 9 for hearing on a writ petition filed more than four years ago challenging the legality of Jamaat-e-Islami's registration as a political party. It also asked Jamaat's lawyer Abdur Razzaq to submit before it by this time a reply to a rule the court had issued over the legality of the party's registration. Following the writ petition, the HC on January 27, 2009 had issued the rule asking Jamaat's chief and its secretary general and the Election Commission (EC) to explain why the party's registration should not be declared illegal.
