A central leader of Jamaat-e-Islami died allegedly due to torture by police in the capital on Sunday, the party has claimed. Police however said they did not pick up Abul Ala Mohammad Iqbal let alone torturing him. Iqbal, a member of Majlis-e-Shura, the highest policymaking body of the party, and its Tejgaon unit ameer (chief), died around 2:00pm at Metropolitan Hospital in the capital. "We don't even know the reason of the death," Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Tejgaon Industrial Police Station, told The Daily Star. "We rushed to Metropolitan Hospital after hearing the death news of the Jamaat leader and we found him dead," he added. In a press release, Jamaat alleged that police picked up Iqbal when he was leading a procession in Tejgaon area in support of Monday's hartal. Police released the Jamaat leader after he felt sick in the custody. He died at Metropolitan Hospital where he had been rushed, the press release said.
