Jamaat goes berserk in 3 dists
Jamaat-Shibir men vandalised vehicles and block roads in Pabna, Kurigram and Bogra on Thursday in protest against a verdict declaring illegal Jamaat-e-Islami's registration with the Election Commission.
The High Court earlier in day delivered the judgment accepting a writ petition that challenged the legality of the registration of Jamaat as a political party.
Minutes after the announcement of the verdict, several hundred activists of Jamaat and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, vandalised several vehicles barricading Dhaka-Pabna highway in two upazilas in Pabna.
As soon as the news spread, the stick-wielding Jamaat-Shibir men took to the highway in Rajapur area of Sadar upazila and in Dashoria area of Ishwardi upazila of the district, reported our Pabna correspondent.
The unruly party men vandalised several vehicles on the highway, spreading panic among the passengers.
The barricade withdrawn around 6:00pm, reports our Pabna correspondent.
The Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a procession and burst cocktails and vandalised vehicles in Bogra town around 4:00pm, reports our Bogra correspondent.
In another development, the opposition activists vandalised a bus on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway around 4:15pm and at least four small vehicles in the second bypass of Shabgram area of the town.
In Kurigram, hundreds of Jamaat-Shibir activists created barricades on the Kurigram-Bhurungamari road in Pateswari Bazar area and Kurigram-Chilmari road at Jatinerhat in Sadar upazila.
The barricade in Pateswari Bazar area lasted about two hours while the barricade in Jatinerhat area withdrawn about one hour later.
