Hasina to meet Manmohan in NY

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the sidelines of the UNGA later in the month will meet her Indian counterpart Manmohan Sing and discuss different bilateral issues. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said the PM will meet with a number of his counterparts, including the Indian prime minister, to discuss a range of bilateral and global issues. She said the dates of the bilateral talks with foreign heads of government were yet not finalised as those were evolving. She said Dhaka will sign and ratify two UN treaties on arms trade and inhumane weapons convention to foster peace and security, stop arms flows as well as to restrict the use of specific types of weapons that affect civilians indiscriminately. Hasina will sign the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) and also ink ratification on the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons on September 26 aiming to ensure international disarmament slated by the UN. The foreign minister told the journalists that the premier, who will visit the United States on September 23-28 to attend the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), will begin important meetings in New York on September 24. Dipu Moni said this year’s UNGA is important for Bangladesh from different aspects. The international community listens to Bangladesh’s positions on international issues with due importance among the developing nations, she added. She said the premier will deliver her speech at the plenary session on September 27 when she would call for international cooperation and dialogue for global peace and security. Hasina will also stress peaceful solution of the civil war like situation in Syria and condemn the attack of chemical weapons in Damascus on August 21.
