Thakurgaon-1 seat declared vacant after Mirza Fakhrul’s swearing-in as president
The Election Commission today declared the Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary seat vacant following Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s swearing-in as president yesterday.
The by-election to the seat will be held within 90 days as required by law, EC Secretary Abdur Rahmanel Masud told The Daily Star this afternoon.
“The seat has been declared vacant today. Under Article 123 of the Constitution, the election will be held within 90 days,” he said.
He added that the law allows the chief election commissioner to extend the deadline by up to another 90 days if extraordinary circumstances, such as natural calamities, make it impossible to hold the election within the stipulated period.
