2 girls killed as cocktails explode in Mirpur

Two minor girls were killed in cocktail explosions at Mirpur in the capital on Sunday. Kulsum Akter, 9, daughter of Abdur Rashid, died around 6:45pm while four-year-old Riya Akter succumbed to her injuries around 7:35pm at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Kulsum and her niece Riya lived with their parents at the ground floor of a six-storey building at Mirpur section-13. Mosharraf Hossain, a neighbour, at the hospital said around the girls were found seriously wounded and bleeding profusely after a loud bang was heard around 3:30pm. They rushed the girls to a local hospital and later shifted to the DMCH as their condition deteriorated. Kazi Wazed Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kafrul Police Station, told The Daily Star that splinters of cocktails and scotch tapes were found near the staircase on the ground floor of the building. He assumes two cocktails exploded. The OC said there were construction materials in a messy environment near the explosion site. Quoting family sources of the victims, he said the two minor girls were playing there. Riya’s father, Riaz Hossain, works as a caretaker of the building.
