Photo: Focus Bangla Several hours of shower yesterday evening brought a slight relief to the city dwellers who endured a week-long heatwave coupled with power cuts and rise in humidity. Despite the shower, weathermen forecast the day temperature would remain more or less unchanged across the country today. Meanwhile, lightning struck many parts of the country yesterday, killing two in the capital, five in Chapainawabganj, two in Rajshahi and three in Sherpur districts. After yesterday's brief rain, the mercury went down to 35.2 from 36 degrees Celsius in Dhaka, according to the Met Office. People welcomed the brief spells of rain on the fifth day of monsoon. "I'm glad that I'll be able to sleep tonight after spending three sleepless nights because of the unbearable heat," said Sharmeen Akhtar, a college student. Tapan Das, a government employee, was seen enjoying being drenched in the evening rainfall. "As I can't afford the cooling comfort of air-conditioner, my two-year-old daughter became sick after passing many sleepless nights. I think, she is happy today,” he said. Around 3:00 pm in the capital, two workers were killed and eight others sustained burn injuries in lightning strikes at a construction site of British High Commission at Baridhara. The deceased were identified as Wasim, 19, and Sohail, 19, of Naogaon district. British High Commissioner in Dhaka Robert Gibson expressed deep shock and condolences at the deaths. Five people killed in Chapainawabganj lightning strikes were identified as Md Mikail, 15, of Chandlai area in the town, Omar Ali, 18, and Jahurul Islam, 20, of Sadar upazila, Md Moslem, 40, of Gomostapur, and Md  Shamim, 22, of Shibganj upazila. At Godagari in Rajshahi, two were killed in lightning strikes around 3:00 pm. The deceased were Tariqul Islam, 36, and Rejaul Islam, 26, of Barinagar village in Char Ashariadaha union. There were reports of shower in most parts of the country yesterday evening.
