DIG, 22 other cops face music
Govt withdraws them for failure to contain Jamaat-Shibir violence
The home ministry yesterday closed 23 police officers, including one deputy inspector general (DIG), three superintendents (SP) and one deputy commissioner (DC), for their failure to discharge duties during the recent violence.
The officials include Khulna range DIG Mezbah Uddin Ahmed, Satkhira SP Md Asaduzzaman, Gaibandha SP AKM Nahidul Islam, Dinajpur SP Devdas Bhattacharya and DC (South) of Khulna Metropolitan Police Hasan Mahmud Shawkat Ali.
Other officials closed are: an assistant superintendent of Chittagong district, and officers-in-charge of 17 police stations of different districts, where BNP and Jamaat-Shibir men had carried out violence since February 28, the day the International Crimes Tribunal-1 awarded capital punishment to Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
According to the home ministry and police headquarters, the 23 officials had been directed to report to the police headquarters by today.
Talking to The Daily Star over the phone last night, State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Huq Tuku said the decision has been made based on information provided by the police headquarters.
"Besides, the aim of the measure is to make the police administration more proactive," he added.
Since February 28, activists of Jamaat-Shibir and BNP killed at least eight policemen in different attacks, while around 80 people were killed across the country in clashes between opposition supporters and law enforcers.
