Dhaka to host confce on UN peacekeeping next month
Bangladesh will host an international conference on UN peacekeeping operations early next month.
The conference will be part of the United Nations' global programmes to mark the 50th anniversary of its peacekeeping operations.
A seminar on "South Asia's Peacekeeping Experience" will be held in Dhaka from February 9 to 12 to highlight the participation of member countries of the South Asian region in the peacekeeping missions.
Bangladesh Armed Forces Division along with the US Pacific Command will jointly organise the international conference in Dhaka.
The seminar will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Among the countries that would participate in the peacekeeping conference will be Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
There would be two participants representing the United Nations headquarters.
Observers from Australia, Canada, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and the Philippines are expected to join the conference.
Bangladesh currently holds the second position in terms of participation in global peacekeeping operations which is topped by Pakistan.
There are presently over 900 Bangladeshi peacekeepers abroad of whom 772 are involved in the Iraq-Kuwait observation missions.
Although the United Nations was set up after the Second World War in 1945, UN peacekeeping operations began from 1948.
