India has assured Bangladesh of removing all barriers to full implementation of the Ganges water sharing treaty signed between the two countries on December 12, 1996, reports UNB. Indian Prime Minister IK Gujral gave the assurance when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called on him at his hotel suite here yesterday afternoon. Gujral, who was in the city to attend the three-nation Business Summit, said his country will remove all impediments to the implementation of the water treaty and maintaining transparency in the water flow. Sheikh Hasina thanked the Indian Prime Minister for giving surplus water this season, saying that this will further consolidate the Indo-Bangla relations. She informed Gujral of the international seminar on the proposed Ganges Barrage to be held in Dhaka in March and said the barrage will also be beneficial to India. The Prime minister referred to the CHT peace agreement and said development programmes will start in the region soon. Referring to the business summit, she said businessmen should not only try to improve their own condition, they should also strive to ameliorate the lot of the common people.
