Rab personnel killed while confronting suspected mugger in Sylhet

A Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) member in plainclothes was killed after being stabbed in the chest while confronting a mugger in Sylhet city today.

The deceased was identified as Emon Acharya, a member of Rab-9, said Manzurul Alam, additional deputy commissioner (media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP).

Manzurul said the incident happened around noon in the Topkhana area, when a team from Kotwali Police Station was chasing several suspected muggers.

Seeing this, Emon stepped forward and grabbed one of them. The man then stabbed him in the chest with a knife.

Emon was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he died around 1:30pm.

The ADC said after stabbing the Rab personnel, the attacker fled and entered a nearby house, taking a child hostage. However, police subsequently arrested him.
