A Dhaka court today granted permanent bail to senior journalist Anis Alamgir in a case filed over allegations of acquiring assets beyond known sources of income.

Judge Md Sabbir Faiz of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court in Dhaka passed the order following a petition, court bench assistant Riaz Hossain told The Daily Star.

The court also accepted another petition regarding his travel abroad, allowing Anis Alamgir to stay abroad for one month.

However, the judge rejected a separate petition seeking exemption from his personal appearance before the court on the scheduled date.

On March 11, he was granted bail in the case until today.

On January 15, ACC Assistant Director Akhtaruzzaman filed the case under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act with the commission’s Integrated Office-1 in Dhaka. On January 28, Anis was shown arrested in the case.

On December 14 last year, Anis was picked up from a gym in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area and taken to the Detective Branch office on Minto Road.
