Chandpur gold trader detained in Patiya following complaints over money, gold: Police

A Chandpur gold trader was detained along with his family from his ancestral home in Chattogram’s Patiya early today after allegedly taking money and gold jewellery from people and going into hiding, police said.

A team of Chandpur Model Police Station detained Pintu Das, 45, in an operation at around 5:00am from his native home in Dalghat Das Para of Patiya, said Chandpur Additional Superintendent of Police Md Lutfur Rahman.

He said Pintu and his family were being brought back to Chandpur.

According to police, Pintu, the owner of SK Jewellers and Shilpalay, at Akhand Market on Cumilla Road in Chandpur town, fled from his rented house with his family in the early hours of August 19.

Several gold buyers and sellers later complained to police and the local gold traders’ association that Pintu owed them money and gold.

Chandpur Model Police Station Sub-inspector Kalam Gazi said police launched a search after Russell Khan, owner of the house where Pintu and his family lived, filed a general diary over his disappearance on August 22.

Police searched for him in Chandpur and Cumilla and contacted his relatives and acquaintances, but could not find him. They eventually located him at his ancestral home in Patiya, he said.

Chandpur SP Md Mizanur Rahman said Pintu was traced with the help of a truck driver who had helped him flee.

No case has been filed yet against Pintu Das, the SP said. Legal action will be taken if any creditor files a case against him, he added.
