Chapainawabganj Jamaat man killed in BGB firing
An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed and four were injured as BGB men after being attacked by the party men opened fire on them in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj on Monday.
The members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) spread bullets when the Jamaat men hurled bombs on them, reported our correspondent.
Former Jamaat chief Ghulam Azam was handed 90-year jail on Monday for his role in the murder and genocide of the independence-seeking people of the land who were fighting occupation Pakistani army in 1971.
Deceased Nurul Islam, 43, was the inhabitant of Rasulpur area of the upazila headquarters.
Police and witnesses said, the activists of Jamaat and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, were staged demonstration blockading Chapainawabganj-Sonamasjid highway at Rasulpur area around 1:00pm.
When a patrol team of BGB tried to disperse them from the spot, the Jamaat-Shibir men threw brick chips on them.
They also threw several handmade bombs targeting the law enforcers.
At one stage, the BGB men open fired, leaving Nurul Islam dead on the spot and injuring four others.
Injured Jamaat-Shibir men have been taking treatment secretly, said Monirul Islam, acting ameer of Shibganj upazila unit of Jamaat.
The Jamaat leader claimed that law enforcers opened fire on them without any provocation.
Bashir Ahmed, superintendent of police in Chapainawabganj told The Daily Star that he heard about the death.
