Myanmar's Troops Buildup

BGB on alert, not alarmed

Unb, Dhaka
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) was alert but not alarmed by the report that Myanmar has deployed three regular army battalions along its border with Bangladesh. “We're yet to receive any indication of army deployment by Myanmar from our troops deployed along the border. We're watchful, but not worried about it,” BGB Director General Major General Aziz Ahmed told UNB. As per the information provided by the BGB members, there was nothing abnormal at the border, he added. He, however, said the Myanmar authorities can keep their army near the border to ensure security of the police force deployed along its border with Bangladesh after the disbandment of its border force Nasaka. Myanmar media, citing security sources, reported that the authorities have deployed three army battalions along the Bangladesh border to tighten security and the army has already camped within five miles of the border. Besides, two police battalions will be sent later, ELEVEN Myanmar reported quoting the chief minister of the Rakhine state as saying. Nasaka was formed by the former junta in 1991 for the border security in the Rakhine state. It was comprised of officers from the army, police, customs and immigration departments.
