Bangladeshi victim's family paid Rs 5 lakh

The Indian government on Sunday paid Rs 5 lakh to the family of a Bangladeshi citizen of northern district of Rajshahi, who was gunned down by India's border guards three years ago. Members of Indian Border Security Force (BSF) gunned down Shah Alam, 40, of Alaipur frontier in Bagha upazila on November 9, 2010, reported our Rajshahi correspondent quoting Col Sarker Muhammad Shamsuddin, deputy director general and Rajshahi sector commander of Border Guard Bangladesh. BGB officials handed over the bank cheque to Alam's wife at a function at Rajshahi sector BGB headquarters Sunday. Earlier on Friday, BSF officials handed over the cheque, signed on July 11, to BGB authorities BGB at a flag meeting held at Indian Shingpara BSF camp. According to the victim's family, Alam was cutting grass for his cattle when he was some BSF members locked in altercation with him. At one stage, they shot him dead, family members added. "It is the maiden case for Indian government to provide compensation for killing a Bangladeshi man," said Col Sarker Muhammad Shamsuddin. Beauty Khatun could not hold her tears while receiving the bank cheque. Since the killing of her husband, she had to work as domestic help at other men’s houses to manage square meals for her sons, Beauty told reporters. Saying that she even failed to send her sons to schools, the woman expressed hope that she could now start their education.
