Cox’s Bazar-2 Jamaat candidate Azad’s nomination cancelled
The nomination of AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad, central assistant secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and a candidate for the Cox's Bazar-2 (Maheshkhali–Kutubdia) constituency, has been cancelled during scrutiny.
Cox's Bazar district Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Md A Mannan announced the decision on Friday evening after the scrutiny process.
He said the nomination was initially kept pending but later cancelled.
Explaining the decision, Mannan said that the cancellation was due to complications related to a case.
He did not provide further details, noting that the official cancellation certificate would mention the specific reasons.
He added that Azad can appeal seeking reinstatement of his candidacy.
On the day of scrutiny, Supreme Court lawyer Md Arif, representing Azad, explained that a contempt of court case was filed against his client during the Awami League-led government.
Arif argued, "The case was one of contempt of court, not related to any criminal offence. The returning officer announced the decision unilaterally without hearing our arguments."
