Man and two grandchildren drown in pond

A 70-year-old man and his two grandchildren drowned in a pond in Shakchar area of Lakshmipur Sadar upazila yesterday afternoon, said police.

The deceased were identified as Abu Siddique Patwary, 70, and his grandchildren Pias, 9, and Promi Akter, 7.

They were residents of the Shakchar area.

The incident occurred between 1:00pm and 2:00pm, said Wahid Parvez, officer-in-charge of Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station, quoting family members.

Citing locals, police said Siddique went to a pond near his house with the children to bathe.

After diving into the water, he failed to resurface. His grandchildren then tried to rescue him but drowned, The OC said.

Locals recovered the three bodies about an hour later.

“Necessary legal action will be taken following discussions with the family,” he added.
