Excavation of Buriganga old channel to start in Feb: Taposh
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh today said they are hoping to start the excavation work of Buriganga Adi (old) Channel from February next year.
The DSCC mayor made the comment while visiting the site to construct two bridges at the Kamrangirchar flood protection embankment.
"We will establish a central commercial zone in Kamrangirchar keeping in mind we have to construct two bridges at the area to ensure smooth communication between the main city and Kamrangirchar," said Taposh.
"We have seen the possible location of the proposed bridges and approach roads," he said.
The DSCC mayor said they have already evicted part of its encroachers and were hoping to start a joint eviction drive along with the Dhaka district administration to recover all the portions of Adi Buriganga Channel which are still under encroachments, from next week.
The DSCC mayor said under the master plan they are also planning to construct six-lane roads on flood protection embankment of which two lanes of both sides will be expressway while one lane at both sides will be used as a service road to make a connection with the expressway with internal roads.
He said they are not only making plans, but they are also doing work for its execution at a time.
Responding to the probe report on the recent accident of their garbage carrying vehicle that killed a student, the mayor said they have already completed the probe report are taking action against those who were guilty.
The mayor also said they have also decided not to allow any other person except their designated drivers to operate their garbage trucks.
"We will take stern action against those who will violate the decision and we are making reforms so that they do not get any scope like this in future," said the mayor.
