Pre-UP polls violence: One killed, 6 injured in Jhenaidah
A man was killed and six others injured this evening in a clash between the supporters of two chairman candidates for Sarutia Union Parishad election, scheduled to be held on January 5, in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah.
The deceased was identified Haran Biswas (60), son of Bilat Ali of Katlagari village, reports our Jhenaidah correspondent.
Witnesses said the incident happened at Katlagari Bazar this evening while supporters of Awami League-backed chairman candidate Mahmudul Hasan Mamun and independent candidate Julfiker Tipu were campaigning.
The clash ensued following an altercation between the supporters of both the candidates during the election campaign.
Both the group, equipped with homemade weapons, attacked each other, leaving seven people, including Haran Biswas, injured.
The injured were taken to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead, they said.
Confirming the death, Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-Charge of Shailkupa Police Station, said police brought the situation under control and additional policemen were deployed in the area to avoid further trouble.
The process of filing a case is underway, added the OC.
