Youth shot in front of Shaheed Minar dies at DMCH

Public apprehend suspect, hand him over to police

Miscreants shot a young man dead in front of the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on Sunday night.

The victim, Mohammad Rakib, 25, lived in the staff quarters adjacent to the Shaheed Minar. His friends described him as a content creator.

Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station, said Rakib was shot and stabbed around 9:10pm by unidentified miscreants. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.

Dr Mostak Ahmed, a surgeon at DMCH’s emergency department, confirmed that Rakib died at 10:30pm while undergoing treatment.

Witness GM Ishan, who took Rakib to the hospital, said, “A few friends and I were hanging out near the Shaheed Minar when we heard several gunshots. We rushed forward and saw a young man lying in a bloodied state. We quickly took him to the hospital.”

Rakib’s friend Rony said, “Rakib was having tea with friends at a stall near the Shaheed Minar. A young man called him over. Shortly after, there were sounds of gunshots. When I reached the spot, I saw Rakib lying in a pool of blood.”

Rony said Rakib had been shot in the head and sustained multiple stab wounds.

OC Moniruzzaman said immediately after the incident, people caught a young man from the Shaheed Minar area and handed him over to police. “Police have visited the scene. The matter is being investigated.”

Masud Alam, deputy commissioner (Ramna zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told The Daily Star that during interrogation, the detainee told police that the victim was a TikToker. “But, the reason behind the murder could not be known yet. We are still interrogating the suspect.”
