A leader of Swechchhasebak Dal was detained last night for allegedly assaulting an on-duty police officer inside Shibpur Police Station in Narsingdi while attempting to secure the release of an Awami League leader.

The detainee, identified as Abid Hasan Jaj Mia, is the member secretary of the Swechchhasebak Dal's Shibpur upazila unit, said Md Afzal Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station.

Police said law enforcers yesterday afternoon arrested Nadim Sarkar, chairman of Joynagar Union Parishad and a local AL leader, as he is accused in multiple cases.

Later, around 10:00pm, Abid went to the police station with a group of supporters and wanted to meet Nadim, who was in police custody.

When on-duty Constable Sabuj Mia barred him from entering the detention area, Abid allegedly became furious and physically assaulted the constable the OC said.

Police present at the scene detained him immediately, the police official said.

"The accused obstructed government duties inside the police station. A case is being prepared against him by Constable Sabuj with the police Station," he added.

Eyewitnesses said Abid also threatened police officials, saying, "If you want to keep your job here, you must listen to me. Otherwise, you can't work in this station."

According to police and locals, Nadim is a known criminal whose influence has grown significantly since becoming the upazila unit's member secretary.
