SI arrested for raping woman in Barishal

Police have arrested the in-charge of Steamerghat Police Outpost in a case filed for raping a complainant at a hotel in Barishal on October 13, 2022.

The arrestee, Sub-Inspector Abul Basher, was the in-charge of Steamerghat Police Outpost under Kotwali Police Station in Barishal, reports our local correspondent quoting Azimul Karim, officer-in-charge of the police facility.

The arrest was made following a case filed by the victim with the police station and he was produced before a court today (October 15, 2022), added the OC.

According to the case document, on October 5, 2022, the SI got introduced with the woman over a complaint and exchanged mobile numbers.

On October 13, 2022, the victim called the SI to consult with him about a complaint.

"The SI asked her current location. When she informed him about the location, the SI rushed to the spot and took her to a hotel room and raped her there," the case statement said.

A case was filed against the SI as per direction of Barishal Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Saiful Islam, the OC added.

Sources said there are also extortion allegations against the SI.

Earlier, he was temporarily suspended over assaulting a journalist while working at Detective Branch of Police.
