Pregnant woman dies at illegal pvt clinic in Ctg

A woman died after she was given an anaesthetic injection for a Caesarean section at an unlicenced private clinic in Fatikchhari, Chattogram.

After 22-year-old Zannatul Mawa died around 8:00pm on Tuesday, her grieving family members and locals vandalised Sheba Clinic, said Kazi Masud, the officer in charge of Fatikchhari Police Station.

The clinic is now under lock and key and will face legal action, Ilias Chowdhury, the civil surgeon in Chattogram, told The Daily Star.

Since the clinic is unregistered, it is deemed an illegal entity, he said.

Asked why no action was taken against the clinic earlier, he said the authorities were not aware of it.

Zannatul, who was the wife of Roman Uddin from the Manikpur area of Fatikchhari, was admitted to the clinic on Tuesday morning.

Shortly after being taken to the operation theatre, the clinic's employees informed her family members that she had died of a cardiac arrest, locals said, adding that the doctors and nurses had fled by the time.

As the news spread in the neighbourhood, locals along with the victim's family members started damaging the clinic's premises.

Police then rushed to the spot and calmed the situation, Masud said, adding that no case had been filed over the incident.

Contacted, Swapan Dey, managing director of the facility, said: "The patient died of a cardiac arrest after she was given an anaesthetic injection."

A medical investigation would be able to confirm whether there was a wrong treatment.

"The clinic began operation in January. We applied for a licence and a team from the health directorate visited the clinic. We were waiting to get the licence, but it was taking time. Still, it was our fault that we were running the clinic without a licence as per the rule."
