Peon attacks five HSTU teachers

An employee of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU) attacked five teachers of the civil engineering department with broken glass on the campus yesterday.

The injured -- Md Rakonuzzaman, chairman of the department; Belal Hossain and Harun Ar Rashid, its associate professors; and Nirmal Chandra Roy and Mahbub Hossain, professors -- were admitted to Dinajpur's M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital.

Chairman Rokonuzzaman said Tajul joined his work late like every day. When he was asked about this, he got angry and locked into an altercation with the teachers.

At one stage, he broke two drinking glasses and attacked Belal Hossain with the broken pieces around 9:15am.

The other four came under attack when they tried to save Belal.

Later, the teachers and employees of other departments gathered, detained Tajul, and handed him over to the university administration.

Vice Chancellor Prof M Kamruzzaman said the authorities already suspended the peon, and legal action will be taken against him.

Tajul could not be contacted as his cellphone was found switched off.
