MJF concerned over surge in rapes; calls for taking effective steps
Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) has expressed grave concern over the increasing rate of rapes across the country in the recent days.
MJF came up with its reaction a day after media yesterday published reports of deaths of a child and a woman in Pabna and Sirajganj, according to a press release.
MJF also called upon the government to take effective steps to prevent such incidents of torture and violence against children and women, it added.
According to data of Ain O Salish Kendra, 506 children were victims of rape from January to July. Of them, 49 were under six years old, and 93 were aged between seven and 12.
During the same period, 818 women were raped and of them, 171 were gang-raped, the press release said.
In the release, MJF Executive Director Shaheen Anam called upon the government to find out the reasons behind the rise in rapes.
She also urged the government to provide security to women and children through taking effective steps, the release said.
