Man kills mother-in-law for protesting domestic abuse over dowry in Shariatpur

A woman was killed today allegedly by her son-in-law for protesting against his demand for dowry and domestic violence against her daughter in Jajira upazila of Shariatpur.

The incident took place around 8am in Choukidarkandi village under Borokandi union in the upazila, reports our Shariatpur correspondent quoting Mintu Mandal, officer-in-charge of Jajira Police Station.

The deceased, Jabeda Khatun (40), today went to visit her daughter Lima Akhter after she gave birth to a boy a month back, he said.

There she found Lima's husband Parvez physically assaulting her over his demand for dowry, and protested against it.

In response, Parvez beat her up with cane and rod and left her critically injured, the OC said citing victim's relatives.

Relatives rushed her to Jajira Upazila Health Complex where doctor declared her dead on arrival, the police official also said, adding that the body has been kept at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Accused Parvez is on the run since the incident, OC Mintu said.

Filing of a case in this connection was underway, he added.
