Man held with foreign currency worth Tk 2.5 crore at Dhaka airport

Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn) detained a man with foreign currencies equivalent to Tk 2.5 crore at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport this morning.

Jahangir Gazi (36) was detained at the airport as he was trying to board an Istanbul-bound Turkish Airlines flight around 6:30am, said Ziaul Haque, additional superintendent (Media) of APBn.

The man first denied having any foreign currency with him. But the officials scanned him and found currencies of eight countries, including 11.65 lakh Saudi riyal, he said. 

"The total currencies are equivalent to Tk 2.5 crore. He was trying to smuggle those out of the country," the official said.

Jahangir was a fabric trader. His passport shows that he has travelled 130 times abroad in last two years.

The detainee will be handed over to Customs and filing of a case against him under Money Laundering Prevention Act is underway.
