Man dies 40 minutes after being held by police in Uttara

A 50-year-old man died in police custody today 40 minutes after he was detained following a clash between two groups at Rajuk Bhaban in Dhaka's Uttara this afternoon.

The deceased, Hiron Miah, was detained at 4:15pm, Jahirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Uttra East Police Station, told The Daily Star.

He said two groups were involved in a clash at Rajuk Uttara Bhaban.

"After getting a 999 call, a police team rushed to the spot and detained two people including Hiron Miah from the spot and took them to Uttara East Police Station," the OC said.

40 minutes later, Hiron fell ill and was rushed to Kuwait-Bangladesh Maitree Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead upon arrival, according to the OC.

The cause of his death will be known after getting the autopsy report, the OC added.
