Ex-BCL leader files case against journalist injured in Savar attack

A former leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) filed a case against journalist Sohel Rana, who came under attack by miscreants in Savar on August 14, 2022.

Samiul Alam Shamim, former president of Ashulia unit BCL, who filed the case was made the main accused in an earlier case filed by the injured journalist.

Yesterday (August 16, 2022), Samiul filed an extortion case against two journalists, including journalist Sohel Rana, our Savar correspondent reports quoting the BCL leader.

Samiul said he filed the case against Sohel Rana, 26, and another journalist Jahin Singh, 28, at the judicial magistrate's court in Dhaka accusing them of demanding Tk one lakh as extortion money. 

Sohel Rana is Savar correspondent of Daily Tritiya Matra and Jahin Singh is the Savar correspondent of the Daily Alokito Bangladesh.

The former BCL leader said "Sohel Rana and Jahin Singh used to take extortion money from me at various times. The last time they came to my office on August 5 and publicly demanded Tk 1 lakh as extortion money. Sohel and Jahin spread propaganda against me on various media outlets and on Facebook for not paying them money, as such I filed a case."

Earlier on August 13, he filed a GD against Sohel and Jahin with Ashulia Police Station, he added.

Samiul denied the allegation of attack on journalist Sohel Rana.

"I have been made the main accused in the journalist attack but I know nothing about the incident."

Sohel Rana, who is now undergoing treatment at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, said Samiul filed a false case against him in order to harass him.

"Shamim and his followers have been spreading various propaganda by distorting my pictures journalist Jahin's on Facebook at different times. "I filed a general diary with Savar Model Police Station in this regard. The next day, I was attacked," Sohel said.
