Auto-rickshaw driver arrested for raping passenger in Bagerhat

Police have arrested an auto-rickshaw driver in a case filed over a passenger's rape at Fakirhat upazila in Bagerhat.

The accused, Mahmudul Hasan Rocky (24), of Ghanshyampur village of the upazila was arrested early today (April 11, 2022) from the C&B Bazar area, reports our Bagerhat correspondent quoting Fakirhat Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge M Alimuzzaman.

Last night, the victim filed a case against Mahmudul with the police facility.

The victim called national helpline 999 last night, claiming she was raped. From there the matter was immediately informed to OC KM Azizul Islam of Bagerhat Sadar Police Station.

Following his orders, a team of Chulkathi Police arrested Mahmudul. Later, they handed over the victim and the accused to Fakirhat Police Station, said Alimuzzaman.

Quoting the victim, the OC said on the night of April 8, she left C&B Bazar for Khulna in an autorickshaw after receiving news of her husband's sudden illness. When he reached Shyambagat in Fakirhat, the autorickshaw driver Mahmudul Hasan threatened her and took her to a place nearby and raped her.

The accused has admitted to committing the crime during primary interrogation, he said.

He was produced before a court after the legal process, added OC Alimuzzaman.
