AL leader in Manikganj sent to jail over attempt to rape college student

A local leader of Awami League was sent to jail today in a case filed over attempting to rape a college student in Shivalaya upazila of Manikganj.

A senior judicial magistrate of Manikganj passed the order after police produced Monoronjon Shil Nokul (50) before the court today, said Mohammad Hafizur Rahman, additional superintendent (crime and administration) of Manikganj police.

"We arrested him (Nokul) on Friday afternoon after the college student filed the case. We sent him to court today. He was sent to jail by the court order," said the additional SP.

Nokul is organising secretary of Shivalaya upazila unit of AL, said Abdul Quddus, general secretary of the upazila AL. adding that organisational action would be taken at the party meeting if they found his involvement in the rape attempt.

Quoting the case statement, Additional SP Hafizur said Nokul took the girl to his room and attempted to rape her when she went to his house on Thursday.

As the girl started crying, Nokul's wife rushed to the room and saved her, the police official said.

Talking to journalists, the victim's mother said Nokul gave Tk 5,000 to her and asked not to disclose the incident.

"He also threatened to create problems if we disclose it. We want justice," added the mother.
