27 lakh shrimp fry seized in Barguna while being smuggled; 11 held

Bangladesh Coast Guard seized around 27 lakh shrimp fry in Barguna's Patharghata this morning while those were being smuggled to Khulna.

Coast Guard Patharghata Station Commander Lt Harun Rashid confirmed the development to our Patuakhali correspondent.

He said the Coast Guard team also detained 11 smugglers who were trying to smuggle these shrimp fry to Khulna.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Coast Guard conducted a raid in Kanthaltali area of Patharghata upazila in the morning and recovered the fry from 50 drums and five pitchers, said the Coast Guard official.

Later, the detainees were produced before Patharghata Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive magistrate Hossain Muhammad Al Mujahid who fined the detainees Tk 1,000 each, he said.

The seized fry were later released into the river, said Commander Lt Harun Rashid, adding that the campaign will continue.
