Two killed in road accidents

UNB, Dhaka

Two persons were killed and two injured in separate road accidents in the capital early yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Samanta Alam Jyoti, a 19-year-old second-year mechanical engineering student of UCEP Institute of Science and Technology (UIST); and Kazi Aminul Haque (35), son of Kazi Alimul Haque and a resident of Mohakhali.

The first accident occurred at Mirpur around 1:00am while Jyoti was returning home in Diabari Bazar area from the UIST campus on her friend Niloy's motorbike, said her father Nurul Amin.

"Niloy lost control over his bike as a speeding truck zipped past. Both the riders fell off the bike and sustained serious head injuries," said Aminul Islam, a sub-inspector at Darus Salam Police Station.

Locals rushed them to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital. They were later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where Jyoti died around 1:45am, the officer said.

Niloy, a fourth-year student of UIST, was undergoing treatment at DMCH.

In Mohakhali, a motorcyclist was killed and his pillion passenger injured as his bike hit a road island near Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons around 2:00am, said Banani Police Station SI Saiful Alam.

Aminul died on the spot, he said.

The injured -- Sumon -- was admitted to DMCH in a critical condition, said the officer.
