Two dead after boat capsizes in Padma River

Two people drowned after a boat capsized in Padma River at Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj this afternoon.

Shibganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sakib Al Rabbi confirmed the news of the boat capsize to our Chapainawabganj correspondent.

The deceased were identified as five-year-old Maisa of Narayanpur village in the upazila and her grandmother Nilufa Yasmin (50), of Dasharshia village, the correspondent reports quoting Jalal Uddin, chairman of Paka union parishad.

Eight others who were on the boat remain missing.

The boat carrying around 30 people left Boglauri ghat for Dasharshia Bazar around 1:40pm, said Jalal Uddin. Locals managed to rescue about 20 to 22 people after the boat capsized due to bad weather, he added.

Fire fighters and locals are conducting a search operation for the missing people.
