Part of Patuakhali college dorm’s ground floor collapses, 10 students injured
Ten students of Patuakhali Government College were injured when part of the ground floor of the college's dormitory collapsed last night.
Seven of them were admitted to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital and the rest received primary treatment, our local correspondent reports.
The incident happened around 11:30pm in front of room 107 -- of the three-storey dorm's ground floor.
Witnesses, including the injured Md Ruman, said that students held a meeting in the room over a seat plan at the dorm. After the meeting, 20-25 students came out of the room and suddenly a part of the corridor collapsed -- creating a five to seven feet deep hole. Most of the students fell in the hole, they said.
Hearing screams of the students, others rushed in and took them to the hospital.
Patuakhali Government College Vice Principal Md Shah Alamgir said that the Education Engineering Department has been notified.
The Education Engineering Department's Executive Engineer (Patuakhali zone), Md Hadiuzzaman, said, "The college ground has been filled using dredgers. Then, no initiative was taken to remove the water from the field. As a result, the water started moving below the building's western side."
He also said, "We have already started reconstruction of the ground floor. The department of Education Engineering built the three-storey dormitory in 2008."
