Five killed as lorry ploughs into crowd
Five vegetable traders were killed and four others injured as a lorry driver lost control of the vehicleand ploughed into a crowd in Narsingdi's Raipura upazila yesterday.
Quoting locals, Azizul Hoque, in-charge of Bhairab fire service station, said the Sylhet-bound lorry lost control and hit nine people while trying to overtakeanother lorry in Mahmudabad Bazar along the Dhaka-Sylhet highway around 8:00am.
On information, police and fire service officials rushed to the spot and rescued them.
Two of them died on the spot and three while being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he added.
The injured were undergoing treatment at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, and the bodies of the deceased were sent to the hospital morgue for autopsies.
The deceased are Faruk Mia, Md Masakin, Ripon Mia, Shah Jahan Mia and Bacchu Mia. They are aged between 30 and 65 and residents of Mirzapur union of Raipura upazila.
Sub-inspector Mozammel Hossain, in-charge of Bhairab highway police, said both the lorries were seized, but the drivers managed to flee.
