Star Digital Report

The fire that broke out at a garment factory inside the old Dhaka Export Processing Zone in Savar this evening was doused after five hours.

Abdul Halim, assistant director of Dhaka Fire Service and Civil Defence, confirmed the matter to The Daily Star.

He said the fire broke out at 6:50pm in the godown of the factory's building. "In an instant, the fire spread to the entire godown. At first, two units of the DEPZ fire service started the work to bring the fire under control."

Later, a total of nine units from Savar, Dhamrai, and Tongi joined in. After a long effort, the fire was doused around 11:20 pm. There were no casualties in the fire and the cause of the fire was not initially known, he added.

When contacted, DEPZ's General Manager (administrator) Abdus Sobahan told The Daily Star that the fire broke out in a 3,200-square-foot storeroom of the label and sticker-making factory.

"The storeroom was mainly stocked with scaffolding such as flammable paper. They're burned. No workers were injured as the factory was closed."

The extent of the damage in the fire is yet to be determined.
