Two killed in 'gunfights' in Ctg, Jhenidah

An alleged criminal and a robber were killed in “gunfights” in Chittagong and Magura early yesterday.

The deceased in Chittagong was identified as Mohammed Nasir alias Mamun, 35, of Boalia in Anwara upazila, reports our Chittagong office.

“He was arrested in Anwara following a tip off on Friday afternoon. The gunfight took place in Dut Kumra area of Barasat union early yesterday [Saturday],” said Dulal Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Anwara police.

He claimed that the “gunfight” took place after police had gone to the area along with the arrestee to recover firearms based on his confession.

“Sensing the presence of police, his accomplices opened fire on police. The police retaliated,” said the OC, adding that the bullet-riddled body of Nasir was recovered from the spot later.

The body was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

“Nasir was a notorious criminal and accused in at least 18 cases for rape, murder, mugging and other crimes in Chittagong and Cox's Bazar,” OC Dulal said.

On September 21 last year, Nasir fled from the lockup of a Chittagong court after he was placed on remand in connection with a case filed for motorcycle theft. Two constables were suspended following his escape, police sources said.

In Magura, a robber was killed in a “gunfight” between two gangs at Rampur village under Mohammadpur upazila, writes our correspondent in Jheniadah.

The deceased was identified as Abul Bashar Biswas, 41, son of Golam Sarwar of Bilbpara village under the upazila.

OC Md Tarikul Islam of Mohammadpur Police Station said they heard gunshots around 3:00am from Rampur village field.

A team of law enforcers rushed to the field and found Bashar's body there. He was declared dead on arrival at Mohammadpur Upazila Health Complex.

Bashar was accused in at least 12 cases for theft and robbery.
