Brutal beating

A video of a woman being tortured in presence of a local government representative for her alleged extramarital affair in Daudkandi upazila has gone viral in social media.

The victim, a mother of four children and wife of an expatriate, was tortured through arbitration in presence of the chairman of Baropara Union Parishad on July 31.

A person wielding a stick in his hand is seen in the 82-second video beating her to the ground. The man hits her several times on the bottoms of her feet and her thighs. Dozens of people including the UP chairman are seen surrounding them, but none of them bats an eye.

The man at one stage turns to her alleged boyfriend and beats him up with the same stick several times.

Her sister filed a case against five people with Daudkandi Model Police Station on August 1. The police have arrested two people in this connection.

She told The Daily Star, “My sister was beaten up the whole night by her brothers-in-law Saiful, Babul, Mintu, Mustak and another brother Khoka's wife Shilpi. They called in her so-called boyfriend from neighbouring Baropara village and confined him. They tortured both of them the whole night.

“In the morning, they arranged arbitration to punish them in front of the whole village. Everything was vague and fabricated,” she alleged.

Contacted, UP Chairman Monirul Islam Talukder said he was brought in to settle a family dispute. He claimed that he did not know anything about it before and that after the incident he advised the victim's sister to take legal action against the culprits.

But the chairman did not do anything to stop the torture.

OC of Daudkandi police said they arrested two accused including Saiful and were looking for the others.
