Indian SC declines petition seeking arrest of Nupur Sharma for Prophet remarks

Star Digital Report

India's Supreme Court today declined to entertain a petition seeking the arrest of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her controversial remarks on the Prophet.

A bench consisting of Chief Justice U Lalit, Justice Ravindra Bhat and Justice PS Narasimha said the "court should be circumspect while issuing directions" and suggested the petitioner to withdraw the petition, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

The plea was then withdrawn by the petitioner who had sought directions for Sharma's arrest for allegedly hurting the sentiments of the Muslim community with her comments during a TV debate in May.

The petition was filed by lawyer Abu Sohel through Advocate Chand Qureshi.

Sharma's remarks had sparked an outrage and New Delhi had to do a strong fire-fight to tame the diplomatic storm.
