Another probe finds cops responsible

Shamim Reza Another probe committee formed by the Narayanganj district police has recommended transfer of three police officials in connection with the torture and death of Shamim Reza in police custody. The probe committee suggested closing two officers-- Arup Tarafdar, inspector (Investigation), and Paltu Ghosh, a sub-inspector of Sonargaon Police Station, -- and transferring Narayanganj Assistant Superintendent of Police (B Circle) Uttam Prashad Bashak. The probe committee also recommended departmental action against officer-in-charge of the police station Atiqur Rahman for his administrative inefficiency and negligence in duty. The committee headed by Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) SM Ashrafuzzaman submitted the report to Superintendent of Police in Narayanganj Syed Nazrul Islam on Tuesday. Earlier on May 26, another probe committee headed by Additional Deputy Inspector General Golam Faruk (Dhaka range) suggested the same punitive action against four police officials including Md Nuruzzaman, deputy inspector general of police (Dhaka range) and three others. In the early hours of May 14, police picked up Shamim, said family members and witnesses. He was confined to Arup’s quarters inside the police station compound and tortured for six days.
